Right away there are two piranha attacks and as disturbing as it is, I have to laugh at fishies attacking people and boats. We then learn that Sarah Monroe’s (Tiffany) experiment to help increase the amount of food in the river goes waaaaay wrong and the piranhas are growing rapidly. For the record ‘Mega Piranha’ was Tiffany’s first Asylum film.
It was fun to see writer director Eric Forseberg make an appearance as a United States Ambassador in the second piranha attack scene. He was on a boat with a dozen South American bikini girls. Good job writing yourself into that scene Eric! Soon we meet Colonel Antonio Diaz (David Labiosa) who comes off as a nice guy, but you can tell he’ll be a dick later in the film. By the way, is there any movie based in South America that doesn’t have guys in fatigues bullying people and girls in bikinis?
This was also Barry William’s first Asylum film and he did a great job as Bob Grady. It wasn’t difficult to get past his Greg Brady role….wait, son of B’ they just switched the first letters, Greg Brady, Bob Grady? Well except Breg isn’t a first name. Either way, look for Barry in the upcoming Asylum film ‘Bigfoot’.
Paul Logan played the role of Jason Fitch and he always kicks ass in his movies. Here he had a knife fight with the fish underwater and booted a dozen or so while doing the bicycle exercise.
Paul also did a majority of the stunt choreographing.
As you tell by the picture, things get real interesting. I have to admit I was cracking up when the piranhas turned into kamikaze fighters and flew themselves into buildings resulting in explosions. Best one was when a piranha must have miscalculated and it ended up skewering itself on a pole.
This is about halfway through the film and the rest is mostly the military attacking the piranhas as they head toward Florida. The military throws everything it has at them, but they fail every time. Fitch realizes what they have to do to stop the fish and it’s a rather simple solution. I can only imagine what he was really thinking “Really that’s all we need to do? So nuking them earlier was probably a bad idea which didn’t accomplish much. Well BP is off the hook now,” but the bottom line is they did stop the Mega Piranhas, but only after a few last comical kills on a Florida beach.
In addition to being entertained, I learned two important things from the film. One is that if you keep a dead cell phone battery in your mouth for a while you get enough of a charge to call in a bombing. The second is, don’t ever shoot a friend in the face with a flare gun, it will blow their head off.
Thanks Redbox for carrying Asylum films.
