Nowadays nothing surprises me, so when I sat down to watch a 400 foot whale movie, I thought, you never know there could be one out there (same applies to Megalodon). The story is set up nicely when a young Ahab loses his leg to Moby (not the singer) back in 1969. BTW, the young Ahab is Jay Gillespie, the guy from “#1 Cheerleader Camp” that was after Erica Duke the entire time. http://wp.me/p2eH5w-O
It’s then present day or I should say 2010 and we meet the pretty Doctor Michelle Herman (Renee O’Connor) and her assistant Pip (Derrick Scott) http://wp.me/p2eH5w-1U . I like when the sub rises up next to their boat and the Navy crew basically abducts Doctor Herman and Pip. Probably best for them considering the name of their small boat is “The Coffin”. They’re then introduced to a present day Captain Ahab (Barry Bostick). Mr. Bostick has a mile long resume and as always did a great job in the film. The only bad thing with Mr. Bostick is now when my kids watch “Phineas and Ferb” and I see the grandpa or the dad I’m going to be picturing Captain Ahab.
The script was well written and handled any crisis. For example, once the crew starts to question the validity of the mission, the sub then goes through a school of dead Navy soldiers from a sub that Dick destroyed. Captain Ahab then delivers a powerful speech motivating them to get revenge. That was critical since we learn that Ahab kinda just “borrowed” the billion dollar sub to use for his personal vengeance against a whale.
If midway through the movie hasn’t scared you enough to avoid Shamu at Seaworld, then the ending will. SPOILER: Moby cruises onto land and is able to jump over a mountain. Here we thought we’re safe on land, but we’re not!!!
One thing I like about films by The Asylum is that they skip the long resolution at the end. After everyone who’s going to die dies and the survivors survive, that’s all I need, I don’t need all the hugs, cheering, or where are they a year later. Thank you Asylum!
Moments to watch for:
- Anticipating a quality kill when we see a Whale Tour boat and hear the annoying tour guide.
- Captain Ahab’s new driftwood cross to replace his lost artificial leg.
- Nuking a school of squid.
- Torpedo heading toward an island and Doctor Herman runs trying to escape it. Meanwhile, the guys just sit there watching the torpedo head toward them and light up a cigar and drink from a flask.
